The Gift of Dreams

The ability to dream and to believe is the foundation for success in every aspect of life.  People who accomplish great things in their lives all begin with a dream.  It doesn’t matter whether they want to invent a cure for a disease, run a marathon at age 70, raise children to be good human beings, or write a best-selling novel.  They think about them all the time.  Every part of their lives is seen through the filter of their dreams, and every decision they make is thought of in terms of how they impact their goals.  They visualize what they want and soon their minds believe it is possible.  Dreams are powerful and should be encouraged, praised, shared, written down, and supported.  When we allow the Gift of Dreams in our lives and summon the courage to follow our dreams, only then do we live life to its fullest.  This month, dream big, dream wise and dream about the day your dream will come true.

Without a vision, the people perish.  Proverbs 29:18

Dreaming With Your Loved Ones:  Conversation Starters

Your dreams become clearer, more focused and closer to reality when they are spoken and shared with those you love and trust, in a supportive environment.  How wonderful it is to listen to a child share her dreams, trusting that you will encourage and nurture her hopes and visions.  This month, encourage one another, beginning the process of really thinking and talking about your dreams.   Try some conversation starters, such as “what do you love to do so much that you lose track of time?”, or “if anything in life were possible, what would you wish for?”  How about “if you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?” or “how would you like to be remembered?”

Those are powerful questions just begging for a considered, thoughtful, and perhaps passionate response sure to draw out deeply held hopes.  To take the dreaming in a different direction, try asking, “How can you use your dreams to help others in the future?”

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11-12

The Double Dare Dream Cake

What are friends and family for but to be supportive and cheer you on toward being the best you can be?  Invite close friends and extended family over for a fun and meaningful get together.  Have each one brings a charm that represents a dream or a goal that is close to his/her heart.  Bake a two-layer round cake and cover it with white frosting.  Take the charms (when your guests arrive) and tie a curled 10-inch ribbon around each charm and push them (one at a time, evenly spaced) into the sides of the cake.  Slice the cake so that there is one ribbon in each slice and pass them out to your guests.  Everyone will have fun trying to guess which charm belongs to whom, and what dreams lay behind each charm.  Sharing your dreams with loved ones, who are there to cheer you on, might be all you need to take that first courageous step and go for it.

“Write down the revelation (dream) and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.  For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though it lingers, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”  Habakkuk 2:2-3

The Dream Treasure Chest

If anything were possible what would you like to do, be, or have?  Make a list of anything you wish could be and prioritize your dreams according to what excites and energizes you the most.  Then think about what’s holding you back.  What steps could you take to move closer to your dreams?  Use cards to record your dreams on one side, and on the other side, write the steps you need to take to achieve them.  You might also decide on a “Family Dream” that everyone can participate in making possible.  Perhaps it’s a family vacation, a ping-pong table, or a surprise party for someone special.  Now, store your dreams in your own treasure chest, and open it periodically to review your progress and inspire yourself once again.
